Who applied for an increase in gambling machines?

The Trust Community Foundation Ltd, 5 Langstone Lane, Northcote, Christchurch 8052, has applied to the Buller District Council to increase the number of gaming machines in an existing Class 4 gambling venue at the Cosmopolitan Hotel, 136 Palmerston Street, Westport 7825.

Currently, there are six gaming machines on the premises. The application requests an additional three gaming machines, bringing the total number to nine machines to be approved.

Submissions opened on Monday, 24 November, and closed at 4:30 pm on Monday, 8 December 2025. Submitters who wish to speak about their applications could do so during the hearings on the 22 April 2026.

Councillors granted the application after hearing from Trust Community Foundation Ltd, which made the application, and Te Whatu Ora, which objected the increase.
